custom themes & YAML license

29 June 2011 at 8:16am

Hello!

Yesterday after installing SilverCart I see that the theme is based on YAML framework...it's is interesting becauase I was considering to use it even before moving to SS & SC. :-)

However, I remember that if one wants to remove links to YAML in the footer, there is need to purchase the license.

So, I'd like if you can provide some more info how to provide custom theme for the site where SC is supposed not to be major but minor part of the site and what is the situation in regard to the YAML license?

Sincerely,
Gour

Hi Gour,

actually, the license conditions are a little bit different and maybe this little bit makes it easier for you.

Condition: For the free use of the YAML framework, a backlink to the YAML homepage (http://www.yaml.de) in a suitable place (e.g.: footer of the website or in the imprint) is required.

Here is the full text: http://www.yaml.de/en/license/license-conditions.html

I think it should be perfectly doable for any project to at least put the backlink in one 'suitable place'.

As for the latter part of your question: from a developer's point of view I would not mix different CSS techniques. Using the framework in only a fraction of the site would bloat the project unnecessarily. I would either go YAML all the way or remove the YAML CSS and replace it by another framework or my own custom code.

The classnames and IDs used in the HTML markup are pretty straightforward, so this should not involve too much work.

Cheers
Ramon

I agree...or dropping backlink and buying the license.

/me nods

I would either go YAML all the way or remove the YAML CSS and replace it by another framework or my own custom code.

I agree...Hopefully it's not too difficult to do use custom code.

Good. I'll investigate further...
